- About Me -
I was born and schooled in the Forest of Dean then moved to Cheltenham for college. I then lived in Ross on Wye, Redbrook and Monmouth. I married a lovely Glaswegian and we lived in English Bicknor for 10 years with three delightful children. Sadly she passed on having moved back to Ross and finally Hereford. A very healthy lady who I knew only for a short time, died suddenly which triggered a complete change of my life and I moved to inland southern Spain for 5 years. I came back to the UK in 2013 with my new Colombian wife.
My musical background;I taught myself to play guitar and I played in local cover bands in my early teens. I went full time in my early 20s and toured with a prog rock band. I formed a new band playing songs that I had written, then cofounded a 9 piece soul band that performed for many years all over the UK. My move to Spain sparked my song writing once again to this day.
My influences;Steve Winwood, Steely Dan, Elvis Costello, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, Crosby Stills, later Beach Boys, Crowded House (Split Ends), The Cure, Paul Carrack, James Taylor, Eva Casidy, Kirsty MacColl as well as Cuban and Flamenco music. I like new music and to see it performed.
What do we sound like? My voice has been likened to Paul Simon and our music a little like Nick Drake.
Where do my songs come from? The chords come first, then the melody line. These dictate the theme for the words. My colourful life means that there is no shortage of inspiration, be it people, places, family, even food as well as Donald T and covid. I refer to these songs as my musical diary.
Why have I recorded them? Just two reasons really; one to take them to the next level with the band but secondly in the hope that perhaps they might appeal to performers who I could write for.
Those Voices – Disc 1
11 SONGS / 59.5 MB
Mike Avery: Drums and percussion
Pete Smith: Base guitar and backing vocals
Richard Gabb: Keyboard and backing vocals
Phil Smith: Lead and rhythm guitars, lead and backing vocals
John David: Sound recording and mixing, backing vocals and incidentals
Album art by Alison (AliCat Design)
This next chapter in my musical diary has mainly new songs combined with a few reworked ones written back when I lived in southern Spain. One of these is the title track, Those Voices which has proved to be very popular with the few that have heard it.
I record these songs purely for posterity and to see them finished but not over produced, so that they can be played live and sound much the same.
I am so lucky that the ideas and the inspiration still comes to me, and I really look forward to the whole experience of compiling the next CD. In the meantime, I do hope you like this one.

Flourishing – Disc 1
13 SONGS
“Flourishing” – 2021
Mike Avery: Drums and percussion
Pete Smith: Base guitar and backing vocals
Richard Gabb: Keyboard and backing vocals
Phil Smith: Lead and rhythm guitars, lead and backing vocals
John David: Sound recording and mixing, backing vocals and incidentals
Flourishing sums up perfectly how these new songs have evolved to create this next chapter of my musical diary. Lockdown gave us a precious once in a lifetime pause in our lives and an opportunity for us to produce the new double sided album. John David, our very gifted engineer, embraces and produces all that we do so seamlessly. He still can’t find a genre to put us in… but i’m not sure that’s such a bad thing.
I am so very grateful for the loyalty, the creative input and the excellent musicianship of Pete and Mick who play on all the tracks. A few earlier ones once again feature the very talented Richard on keyboards and backing vocals and the John Smith took over from him, he also plays a mean sax and has injected a new flavour and atmosphere. Just like Pete, his brother, he and I have been in bands for many years together and so it’s a real pleasure to have the benefit of his talents and his painful modesty once again! A bit thank you to Little John (Hoare) for the precious song writing “leg-up” that he gave me.

The wood through the trees – Disc 1
9 SONGS
“The wood through the trees” – 2021
Kevin Jarvis: Drums and percussion
Pete Smith: Base guitar and backing vocals
Richard Gabb: Keyboard and backing vocals
Phil Smith: Lead and rhythm guitars, lead and backing vocals
John David: Sound recording and mixing, backing vocals and incidentals
Prompted by a life-changing moment, I moved to a sleepy, very Spanish town in central Andalucia. Within days a steady flow of song-writing began and I found myself musically documenting some of my experiences. I recorded the basic songs out there in the hope that at some point I would take them to the next level. When I came back to the UK with my lovely wife Monica who is a keen supporter, I contacted Pete “The Rock” who i played with in the Mighty Pledge just to see what he thought of the songs. I was so thrilled that he liked them and for a year or so we set about arranging them.
These songs have been blessed with a perfect blend of their influences that has evolved something that far surpasses anything that I could have even wished for back in a very bright or dim room in a narro Spanish street in Atequera.
“The icing on the cake” was John David a musician and songwriter of great not who recoreded us in his lovely studio in Berry Hill. He too inspired me and played an important part in shaping and mixing these songs.
